What was Stevie Wonder’s first number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100?

The story behind the answer

Stevie Wonder’s first Billboard Hot 100 number-one hit was “Fingertips.”

The song came from a live performance recorded in 1962 and released in edited form as a single in 1963. Wonder was then known as Little Stevie Wonder, and he was still a teenager. The recording showcases his energetic harmonica playing and call-and-response performance style.

“Fingertips” became a landmark for Motown. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and also topped the Billboard R&B chart. Its success made Wonder the youngest artist to top the Hot 100 at that time, although later artists surpassed that age record.

People sometimes identify “Superstition” as Wonder’s first number-one song because it is one of his best-known adult-period hits. “Superstition” was a later chart-topper, released in 1972, while “Fingertips” established Wonder as a major star a decade earlier.
