Spain defeated Argentina 6–1 in a 2018 international friendly. The match was played on March 27, 2018, at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid during the buildup to that year’s World Cup.
Spain led 2–1 at halftime before pulling away with four second-half goals. Isco scored a hat-trick, while Diego Costa, Thiago Alcântara, and Iago Aspas also scored for Spain. Nicolás Otamendi scored Argentina’s only goal.
Argentina played without Lionel Messi, who was sidelined by a hamstring injury. The result was Spain’s biggest victory over a former World Cup champion and one of Argentina’s heaviest defeats in its history.
The game was a friendly rather than a World Cup match, so it did not affect tournament standings. Even so, it attracted major attention because both teams were preparing for Russia 2018. Spain later exited that World Cup in the round of 16, while Argentina reached the last 16 before losing to France.
