Pokémon Yellow was released in Japan on September 12, 1998.

Known in Japan as Pocket Monsters Yellow, the game was an enhanced version of the first-generation Pokémon formula. It followed the broad structure of Red, Green, and Blue but gave Pikachu a central role, reflecting the character’s popularity in the animated television series. Pikachu followed the player outside its Poké Ball and reacted differently depending on the player’s actions.

The game also changed the available starter Pokémon and adjusted parts of the opening adventure to resemble the anime. Players began with Pikachu rather than choosing Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle from Professor Oak. The game was designed for the Game Boy and also supported the Game Boy Color’s palette.
