What was Pokémon Stadium originally called when released in Japan?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon Stadium was originally called Pocket Monsters Stadium when released in Japan.

Pocket Monsters Stadium launched in Japan for the Nintendo 64 in 1998. It was a strategy role-playing game centered on Pokémon battles and used the franchise’s Japanese name, Pocket Monsters, in its title.

The Japanese game was never released outside Japan. An expanded successor was released internationally as Pokémon Stadium, while Japan used the title Pokémon Stadium 2 for that later version. This naming difference makes the series chronology unusually easy to mix up.

The original Japanese title also reflects the franchise’s early naming history. “Pocket Monsters” was the Japanese name from which Pokémon was derived, while Pokémon became the standard international branding. The two Stadium titles therefore cannot be identified solely by their release order.
