A door was placed on the side of Noah’s Ark as its entrance.
Genesis 6:16 instructs Noah to put a door in the side of the ark. The same verse describes an opening or window and three levels, forming the main architectural details supplied by the construction passage. Genesis later says that Noah, his family, and the animals entered through this arrangement before the Flood.
The text does not describe the door’s hinges, dimensions, locking mechanism, or material. Artistic reconstructions therefore vary widely, from a small side opening to a large monumental doorway. Those details belong to later interpretation rather than the biblical account.
The door should also not be confused with a roof opening. Depending on translation, Genesis 6:16’s Hebrew term for the upper opening is rendered as a window, skylight, or opening. The entrance itself is stated more directly: it was a door in the side.
