What was October 24, 1929, called during the Wall Street Crash?

The story behind the answer

October 24, 1929, was called Black Thursday during the Wall Street Crash.

On that day, panic selling struck the New York Stock Exchange after weeks of falling prices. Trading volume reached a then-record level, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell sharply during the session. A late recovery reduced the day’s losses, but confidence remained badly damaged.

Black Thursday began the famous three-session panic of October 1929. It was followed by Black Monday on October 28 and Black Tuesday on October 29, when selling intensified. The crash did not end in October; U.S. share prices continued declining for several years and reached their low in 1932.

Black Thursday is sometimes confused with Black Tuesday because October 29 produced the largest single-day point loss of the original 1929 collapse. The name Black Thursday specifically refers to Thursday, October 24, the first major day of that panic sequence.
