What was Nintendo's original name for the Nintendo Entertainment System in Japan?

The story behind the answer

Nintendo's original name for the Nintendo Entertainment System in Japan was Family Computer.

Nintendo released the Family Computer, usually shortened to Famicom, in Japan in 1983. Its compact design used interchangeable cartridges and two permanently attached controllers, helping make home console gaming accessible to families.

When Nintendo brought the system to North America in 1985, it redesigned the hardware and renamed it the Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES. The North American version also introduced a gray, box-like appearance and a front-loading cartridge bay intended to resemble a video cassette recorder.

The names can cause confusion because Famicom is also commonly used as the system's Japanese nickname. The Family Computer was not the same product as the later Famicom Disk System, a separate Japan-only disk-based peripheral released in 1986.
