What was Nintendo’s first color-screen handheld console?

The story behind the answer

The Game Boy Color was Nintendo’s first handheld console with a color screen.

Nintendo released the Game Boy Color in Japan in October 1998, then launched it in other major markets later that year. It improved on the original monochrome Game Boy with a color display, a faster processor, more memory, and infrared communication. It remained compatible with the enormous library of original Game Boy games.

The system was not Nintendo’s first color-capable handheld in every technical sense: the Japan-only Game Boy Light used a backlight but still displayed games in monochrome. The Game Boy Color was the first mainline Game Boy hardware to make color its defining screen feature.

Its library included Pokémon Gold and Silver, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons, and Mario Golf. The later Game Boy Advance was more powerful and supported advanced graphics, but it was a successor rather than the original color-screen Game Boy model.
