What was Metallica's position in the band's studio-album chronology when The Black Album was released?

The story behind the answer

The Black Album was Metallica's fifth studio album.

Before it came Master of Puppets in 1986 and ...And Justice for All in 1988, along with the earlier albums Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning. This chronology places Metallica at the center of the band's original run of studio records.

The album is officially self-titled, so “The Black Album” is a nickname rather than a separate title. Fans adopted the nickname because of the sparse, mostly black cover design, which contrasts with the more elaborate artwork of several earlier Metallica releases.

Its position as the fifth studio album is also important musically. The record retained the band's heavy-metal identity but used more concise structures, slower grooves, and a cleaner production style. That change helped Metallica reach listeners who might not previously have followed thrash metal.
