What was Memorial Day originally called when it honored Civil War dead?
Answer
Decoration Day
Answer
Decoration Day
Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day when it honored Civil War dead.
The name referred to decorating soldiers’ graves with flowers, flags, and other memorials. After the American Civil War ended in 1865, communities across the United States began holding springtime ceremonies to remember those who had died in the conflict.
The holiday gradually expanded to honor Americans who died in all wars, not only the Civil War. The name “Memorial Day” became increasingly common during the 20th century and is now the official name used by the federal government.
Decoration Day is sometimes confused with Veterans Day. Memorial Day honors service members who died while serving, whereas Veterans Day honors all U.S. military veterans, living or deceased. The two holidays therefore have different purposes even though both recognize military service.
