What was Marie Curie's youngest-child rank among her siblings?

The story behind the answer

Marie Curie was the fifth and youngest child in her family of five siblings.

She was born Maria Salomea Skłodowska in Warsaw on November 7, 1867. Her parents, Władysław and Bronisława, were teachers who valued education, and all five children grew up in a household shaped by learning and Polish patriotism.

Marie’s older siblings were Zofia, Józef, Bronisława, and Helena. She was the youngest, following Helena, who was born in 1866. Her sister Bronisława later became a physician and helped Marie pursue higher education in Paris; Marie in turn supported Bronisława’s medical studies.

The family experienced serious financial hardship and personal loss. Marie’s mother died of tuberculosis when Marie was ten, and Zofia died of typhus several years earlier. These experiences formed part of the difficult background behind Curie’s later determination to study science. The word “fifth” refers to her birth order among the children, not to a rank among scientists or Nobel laureates.
