What was Leonardo da Vinci’s wheeled vehicle designed to do without a visible driver?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci’s wheeled vehicle was designed to move autonomously without a visible driver.

Leonardo drew the spring-powered cart around 1478–1480. Its internal mechanisms used coiled springs to store energy, and programmable components could determine the distance and direction of travel. The vehicle is often called Leonardo’s self-propelled cart or automobile, although it was not a modern motor car.

The drawing does not provide every construction detail clearly, and later interpretations have differed. In 2006, engineers at the Institute and Museum of the History of Science in Florence built a working replica based on Leonardo’s plans. The reconstruction showed that the cart could move under spring power.

The machine may have been intended for theatrical performances or court spectacles rather than transport. Its importance lies in combining stored mechanical energy, wheels, and limited programmability in one compact design.
