Answer
Self-propelled cart
Answer
Self-propelled cart
Leonardo da Vinci’s self-propelled cart was a four-wheeled machine designed to move without being pushed.
Leonardo drew the mechanism around 1478–1480. Springs stored energy inside the cart, and programmed components controlled the movement of the wheels. The vehicle could therefore travel along a predetermined path, making it an early example of a programmable mechanical device.
The cart was probably intended for theatrical effects rather than transportation. It may have been designed to appear during court pageants, where a moving machine could surprise an audience. Unlike a modern automobile, it had no engine, fuel tank, steering system, or means of continuous powered travel.
A full-scale reconstruction was built and tested in the twentieth century. Reconstructions helped demonstrate that the mechanism could work, although the exact original configuration remains debated because Leonardo’s surviving drawings do not show every detail clearly.
