What was Leonardo da Vinci’s robot designed to resemble?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci’s robot was designed to resemble a medieval armored knight.

Leonardo sketched the humanoid automaton around 1495, probably while working in Milan for Ludovico Sforza. Its internal system of cables, pulleys, gears, and levers was intended to make the figure sit, stand, move its arms, and move its jaw.

The design was probably created for a court spectacle rather than as a practical labor machine. It was not constructed in Leonardo’s lifetime, and the surviving evidence is spread across notebook drawings and related studies. In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a functional reconstruction based on Leonardo’s plans. The figure is often called Leonardo’s robot, but it was a mechanical automaton powered by human-scale mechanisms, not an electronic robot in the modern sense.
