What was Leonardo da Vinci’s mechanical invention designed to resemble a human figure?
Answer
Mechanical knight
Answer
Mechanical knight
Leonardo da Vinci’s mechanical invention designed to resemble a human figure was a mechanical knight.
Leonardo designed the humanoid automaton around 1495 for a pageant in Milan organized for Ludovico Sforza. The armored figure could sit, stand, raise its visor, and move its arms through a system of pulleys, cables, and gears. It was likely concealed beneath armor so that spectators would see a moving knight rather than the mechanism.
No original robot survives, and the surviving evidence comes mainly from Leonardo’s notebooks. In the 20th century, engineers studied those drawings and built reconstructions. One notable reconstruction was created by Mark Rosheim in 2002 and displayed at the Leonardo3 museum in Milan.
Calling it a “robot” is modern terminology. In Leonardo’s time it would have been understood as an automaton: a machine that performs movements through internal mechanical action.
