Answer
A medieval knight
Leonardo da Vinci’s human-shaped mechanical machine was designed to resemble a medieval knight.
Leonardo developed the design around 1495 for a pageant in Milan sponsored by Ludovico Sforza. The machine was placed inside armor and could reportedly sit, stand, raise its arms, and move its head and jaw through a system of cables, pulleys, and gears.
The device is commonly called Leonardo’s robot, although the word robot did not exist in Leonardo’s time. The term was applied much later because the machine was an early example of a programmable-looking mechanical figure. Leonardo’s surviving notes do not provide a complete construction manual, so modern reconstructions have filled gaps in the design.
A detailed reconstruction was made in 2002 by Mark Rosheim, who studied Leonardo’s drawings and built a working model. The invention illustrates Leonardo’s combination of anatomy, theatrical engineering, and mechanical design.
