What was Leonardo da Vinci’s double-hull boat intended to reduce?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci’s double-hull boat was intended to reduce the risk of sinking.

Leonardo designed a vessel with two hulls, an arrangement that created separated buoyant compartments. His notes and sketches show an interest in naval engineering, including ways to make boats safer and more stable on water.

A double hull can provide a form of redundancy: if one outer section is damaged, the second hull may continue to support the vessel. Leonardo’s proposal was therefore connected with protection against flooding and structural damage rather than simply with speed.

The design should not be confused with the modern catamaran as a high-speed recreational boat. Leonardo’s surviving sketches do not establish that he built or tested the vessel, and the exact intended operating characteristics remain uncertain. The important invention is the early use of separated hulls as a safety concept.
