What was Game Freak’s first video game magazine called?

The story behind the answer

Game Freak’s first video game magazine was called Game Freak.

Satoshi Tajiri created the self-published magazine in 1983 when dedicated video game magazines were still uncommon in Japan. It focused on arcade games, including strategies, high scores, and hidden features, and Tajiri wrote and edited much of it himself.

Ken Sugimori later discovered the magazine and joined as its illustrator. The collaboration between Tajiri and Sugimori eventually led to the creation of the Game Freak development company, which was formally established on April 26, 1989.

The company kept the magazine’s name and later developed Pokémon. “Game Freak” therefore refers both to an early publication and to the studio behind Pokémon, a connection that is easy to miss when the name is encountered only in modern game credits.
