What was C.S. Lewis’s birth year?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis was born in 1898, in Belfast, Ireland.

His full name was Clive Staples Lewis, although he preferred the name “Jack,” a nickname adopted during childhood. His older brother, Warren Lewis, was born in 1895 and later became a close companion and fellow writer.

Lewis grew up in a Protestant family and spent much of his adult life in England. His childhood in Ireland, especially his early love of mythology and imaginative stories, influenced themes that later appeared in his fiction. A common mix-up is Lewis’s birth year with the year of his death: he died in 1963, exactly 65 years after his birth.

Lewis became one of the twentieth century’s best-known Christian writers, literary scholars, and authors of fantasy. His birth date was 29 November 1898, a date also associated with the annual remembrance of his work.
