What was Christian Dior’s profession before he became a fashion designer?

The story behind the answer

Before becoming a fashion designer, Christian Dior was an art gallery owner.

Dior opened an art gallery in Paris in 1928 with financial support from his father. The gallery exhibited important modern artists, including Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, and Jean Cocteau. It closed after the Dior family’s financial difficulties during the early 1930s.

This period gave Dior direct experience with modern art and influential creative circles. Those contacts helped shape his visual judgment before he entered the fashion industry. After the gallery closed, he supported himself by selling fashion sketches to newspapers and couture houses.

Dior later worked with designers Robert Piguet and Lucien Lelong before founding his own house. His art background is therefore an important part of the story, but it was not the same as formal training as an architect, filmmaker, or newspaper editor.
