What was Carhartt's first product?

The story behind the answer

Carhartt’s first product was the bib overall, commonly called overalls.

Hamilton Carhartt created the garment for railroad workers who needed tough, functional clothing. The early overalls were made to handle demanding industrial work, with a design that covered the torso, held tools and essentials, and protected ordinary clothing from grime and wear. Carhartt’s company began producing them in Detroit in 1889.

The product was shaped by direct customer feedback. After speaking with railroad workers, Hamilton Carhartt adjusted the design to better suit their movements and working conditions. Early versions used durable duck and denim fabrics, helping establish the construction-focused reputation that still defines the brand.

The answer is sometimes narrowed to “bib overalls,” which is the more precise term, but “overalls” is the standard fair-quiz answer. Hats, pants, and jackets became associated with Carhartt later as the company expanded its workwear range. The bib overall remained the foundational product behind the brand’s early growth.
