Usain Bolt’s winning time in the 2016 Olympic 100 metres final was 9.81 seconds.

Bolt won the final on 14 August 2016 at Rio de Janeiro’s Olympic Stadium. American Justin Gatlin finished second in 9.89 seconds, and Canada’s Andre De Grasse claimed bronze in 9.91, a personal best.

The victory made Bolt the first athlete to win three Olympic 100-metre titles. He had previously triumphed in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012, although his 2008 winning time was later changed in the record books after teammate Nesta Carter’s doping violation affected Jamaica’s relay medal, not Bolt’s individual result.

The 9.81 was Bolt’s slowest Olympic winning time in the event, but it was still a season’s best. It is sometimes confused with his 9.63 Olympic record from the 2012 final or his world record of 9.58, set at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin.
