What village is Bilbo Baggins from?
Answer
Hobbiton
Answer
Hobbiton
What village is Bilbo Baggins from? Bilbo Baggins is from Hobbiton. The village lies in the Shire’s Westfarthing, where Bilbo lives in the comfortable hobbit-hole called Bag End, built into the Hill.
Hobbiton represents the settled, domestic world Bilbo leaves when Gandalf and Thorin’s company draw him into their quest. Its gardens, lanes, mill, inns, and burrows contrast sharply with the trolls, goblins, spiders, and dragon he encounters on the journey. Bilbo eventually returns there after the adventure, although many neighbours believe him dead and auction off his belongings.
Hobbiton is not the same as the Shire. The Shire is the larger region inhabited by hobbits, while Hobbiton is one village within it. Michel Delving is the chief township of the Shire, and Bywater is a nearby village. Bree is a separate settlement east of the Shire, inhabited by both Hobbits and Men.
Film audiences may also know Hobbiton as the New Zealand movie set used in Peter Jackson’s films. That attraction represents Tolkien’s fictional village; it is not the village’s literary location in Middle-earth.
