What U.S. President was assassinated in 1901?

The story behind the answer

The U.S. president assassinated in 1901 was William McKinley.

McKinley, the 25th president of the United States, was shot on September 6, 1901, while greeting members of the public at the Temple of Music during the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. The attacker, Leon Czolgosz, concealed a revolver beneath a bandage and fired two shots.

Doctors initially believed McKinley might recover, but one bullet could not be located and infection developed. He died on September 14, 1901, eight days after the shooting and about six months into his second presidential term. Vice President Theodore Roosevelt then became president.

McKinley's assassination was the third of a sitting U.S. president. Abraham Lincoln had been killed in 1865, and James A. Garfield died after being shot in 1881. John F. Kennedy, another commonly offered answer, was assassinated much later, in 1963. The McKinley assassination also helped prompt stronger federal protection for presidents.
