What unique button layout does the Guitar Hero Live controller use?

The story behind the answer

The Guitar Hero Live controller uses a six-button layout. Its six fret buttons are arranged as two rows of three, replacing the traditional single row of five colored buttons used by earlier Guitar Hero controllers.

The redesign divides the buttons into black and white rows. On screen, players follow three lanes and match notes associated with either row. Lower difficulties can use one row at a time, while harder levels combine buttons from both rows to create chord shapes that more closely suggest real guitar fingering.

The layout was intended to welcome new players by avoiding the pinkie-heavy reach of the older five-button design, while still challenging experienced players with new chord patterns. “Touchpad” is a common mix-up because Guitar Hero Live also offered touch-based play on some mobile devices, but the physical guitar itself uses six fret buttons. The controller retains familiar features such as a strum bar and whammy bar.
