What underground shopping mall near the Louvre opened in 1993?

The story behind the answer

The underground shopping mall near the Louvre that opened in 1993 is the Carrousel du Louvre.

Located beneath the Louvre and the Place du Carrousel in Paris’s 1st arrondissement, the complex was created during the Grand Louvre redevelopment. Its opening connected retail, transport, visitor services, exhibition areas, and an important underground entrance to the museum.

The mall officially opened on 15 October 1993. Its name combines the nearby Louvre with the historic Place du Carrousel, the open space between the Louvre Palace and the Tuileries Gardens. Visitors can reach the Louvre’s underground entrance from the mall, including via the Palais Royal–Musée du Louvre Métro station.

It is often confused with the Forum des Halles, another major underground shopping complex in central Paris, but that development is in the Les Halles district. Galerie Vivienne and Passage Jouffroy are covered passages, not the Louvre’s underground mall.
