Spencerian script was a distinctive American handwriting style developed in the 19th century. Frank M. Robinson, Coca-Cola’s bookkeeper and an early business associate of John Stith Pemberton, suggested the name Coca-Cola and designed the original lettering in 1886.

The lettering’s sweeping strokes made it visually distinctive in advertisements, signs, and packaging. Although the logo has been adjusted over time, its script character remains one of the brand’s strongest visual identifiers.

A common mistake is to describe the logo simply as cursive. Spencerian script is more specific: it refers to a formal writing tradition associated with Platt Rogers Spencer and widely taught in American business settings. Coca-Cola adapted that visual language for commercial branding.
