What type of weapon was Leonardo da Vinci’s giant crossbow designed to be?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed his giant crossbow as a siege weapon.

Leonardo’s drawing shows an enormous bow mounted on a wheeled wooden frame. Its scale was intended to produce a powerful shot against enemy fortifications or troops. The design included a winch mechanism to draw the bowstring, because a person could not easily pull such a large bow by hand.

The device is often called Leonardo’s giant crossbow, although there is no reliable evidence that Leonardo built and successfully tested it. Renaissance military engineers frequently proposed unusually large weapons, and Leonardo’s design belongs to that tradition of spectacular siege machinery.

It is sometimes confused with Leonardo’s multi-barrel cannon and armored vehicle. Those were separate military concepts. The crossbow used a single large bow, while the cannon design relied on many gun barrels.
