What type of weapon did Leonardo da Vinci design with many barrels arranged in rows?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a multi-barreled cannon with many barrels arranged in rows.

His “33-barrel organ” was a gunpowder weapon concept in which small cannons were mounted on a frame. The barrels were arranged in three rows, with eleven barrels in each row. The frame could be angled, allowing one row to fire while the others cooled or were reloaded. The arrangement was intended to increase the rate of fire compared with a single cannon.

The nickname “organ” came from the visual resemblance between the parallel barrels and the pipes of a musical organ. It did not mean that the weapon used music or functioned like an organ. Leonardo’s design remained a proposal, and the practical problems of loading, recoil, accuracy, and handling would have been substantial.

The concept belongs to the broader history of volley guns and multi-barreled artillery. It illustrates Leonardo’s interest in combining repeated mechanical elements to solve military problems.
