Tall ships formed the centerpiece of Sail250, a maritime event for America’s 250th anniversary.
Sail250 was presented as the largest gathering of tall ships since 1976, when Operation Sail helped celebrate the United States Bicentennial. Tall ships are large sailing vessels, often used for naval training, maritime education, ceremonial voyages, or historical interpretation. Their prominent masts and rigging make them especially suited to parades and public harbor visits.
The 2026 event was connected to the wider Operation Sail tradition and included port calls in New Orleans, Norfolk, Baltimore, New York City, and Boston. Participating vessels represented multiple nations, including Italy, Indonesia, Canada, Uruguay, Mexico, Poland, and the United States.
Sail250 is sometimes confused with a conventional naval fleet review. Although naval vessels participated, the defining feature highlighted by the event was the international gathering of tall ships, not submarines or ordinary commercial shipping.
