What type of vehicle did Leonardo da Vinci design with sloping armor and concealed wheels?
Answer
Armored vehicle
Answer
Armored vehicle
Leonardo da Vinci designed an armored vehicle with sloping armor and concealed wheels.
Leonardo sketched the vehicle in the late fifteenth century, probably around 1487, while working on military engineering projects. Its conical armor was intended to deflect incoming weapons, and the structure included a platform from which soldiers could fire. The design resembles a covered wagon or early tank, but it was never produced as a practical battlefield vehicle in Leonardo’s lifetime.
The vehicle was meant to be moved by cranks connected to internal gears. Modern commentators have noted that the gear arrangement in the surviving drawing would make the vehicle difficult or impossible to drive as shown. Some interpret that feature as an error; others have suggested it may have been deliberate, since Leonardo sometimes concealed or altered military designs.
The vehicle should not be called the first tank without qualification. Modern tanks require powered propulsion, armor, weapons, and operational control in a form the Renaissance sketch did not provide. It is more accurately described as an armored fighting-vehicle concept.
