What type of vehicle did Leonardo da Vinci design with sloped armor and an array of cannons?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed an armored fighting vehicle with sloped armor and multiple cannons.

The design appears in Leonardo’s notebooks from the late fifteenth century. It has a conical, turtle-like protective shell made from armor plates, with weapons arranged around the vehicle. The sloping surfaces were intended to deflect incoming projectiles, while a crew inside would operate the machinery and guns.

Although it is often called Leonardo’s tank, the design was not a modern tank in the technical sense. It lacked an engine and would have depended on people turning internal cranks. The gearing shown in surviving drawings also appears problematic: if interpreted literally, the vehicle’s wheels would turn in conflicting directions. Some historians have suggested this may have been deliberate concealment or a design error.

Leonardo offered military designs to powerful patrons, including Ludovico Sforza in Milan. No evidence shows that this armored vehicle was built or used in battle. Its significance lies in combining protection, mobility, and concentrated firepower in one concept.
