Stained glass made by rolling molten glass into sheets with a textured surface is called rolled glass.
In this method, hot glass is shaped into a flat sheet by passing it between rollers. The roller surface can leave regular or irregular textures, allowing the finished glass to scatter light and provide privacy while still admitting illumination. The glass may be colored throughout, or it may be clear with a patterned surface.
Rolled glass is especially useful in architectural glazing and decorative panels because its texture changes how light travels through the window. It should not be confused with painted glass: painting adds a vitreous pigment to the surface, while rolling creates the sheet’s texture during forming.
Crown glass and float glass are made by different processes. Crown glass is spun into circular sheets, while float glass is formed on molten tin to create a very flat surface.
