What type of service is commonly held before a traditional quinceañera reception?

The story behind the answer

A Catholic Mass is commonly held before a traditional quinceañera reception.

This service is often called a Misa de acción de gracias, or “Mass of thanksgiving.” The celebrant and family may give thanks for her life and ask for blessings as she enters a new stage. The religious portion is separate from the later party, even when both are planned as one event.

The practice reflects the strong Catholic influence in many Latin American communities, but it is not a universal requirement. Some families hold a nonreligious ceremony, use another Christian service, or celebrate only with a reception. The presence of a Mass therefore describes a common tradition, not a rule that applies to every quinceañera.

A quinceañera Mass should also not be confused with baptism or confirmation. It is generally a thanksgiving celebration connected with the 15th birthday, rather than one of the Catholic Church’s sacraments.
