Pandora is a shepherd moon because it helps confine Saturn’s narrow F ring. It orbits just outside the F ring, while the moon Prometheus orbits just inside it. Their gravitational effects help shape and maintain the ring’s narrow, intricate structure.
Pandora is a small, irregularly shaped moon of Saturn. It is associated with the F ring’s complex features, including strands and kinks produced by the gravitational influence of the nearby moons. In planetary science, “shepherd moon” describes a satellite whose gravity confines or organizes ring material.
The term does not mean that Pandora is the ring’s only influence. Prometheus and Pandora work together as the main shepherds of the F ring, and the ring itself is made of many icy particles. This astronomical Pandora is therefore distinct from the mythological woman and from the asteroid 55 Pandora.
