What type of robot did Leonardo da Vinci design in 1495 for a court entertainment?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a mechanical knight in 1495 for a court entertainment.

The robot was created for a festival organized by Ludovico Sforza in Milan. Leonardo’s notes and drawings indicate that the figure was dressed in armor and driven by internal gears, cables, and pulleys. It could reportedly sit, stand, raise its visor, and move its arms, although the exact range of motion remains a matter of reconstruction.

The original machine was lost, and no complete contemporary description survives. In the 20th century, Leonardo scholars used his anatomical and mechanical sketches to reconstruct the likely mechanism. Mark Rosheim produced a well-known reconstruction in the 1990s, helping demonstrate how the proposed movements could be achieved.

The machine was an automaton, not an autonomous robot in the modern electronic sense. It had no computer, sensors, or artificial intelligence. “Mechanical knight” identifies both its armored appearance and its function as a programmed moving figure.
