What type of robot did Leonardo da Vinci design for a 1495 Milanese pageant?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a humanoid robot for a Milanese pageant around 1495.

The machine is often called Leonardo’s robot or Leonardo’s mechanical knight. It was probably created for a pageant organized by Ludovico Sforza, the Duke of Milan. Leonardo’s drawings show an armored figure whose internal cables, pulleys, and levers could reproduce human-like actions such as sitting, standing, and moving its arms.

The surviving notebook evidence does not preserve a complete construction manual, and no original robot has been found. In the twentieth century, researchers reconstructed the mechanism from Leonardo’s sketches. These reconstructions demonstrated that the design could produce several movements when operated by an internal system of ropes and gears.

The machine was not an electronic robot and had no independent artificial intelligence. “Humanoid robot” describes its human-shaped mechanical form. Its importance is that Leonardo applied anatomical observation and mechanical engineering to a theatrical automaton centuries before modern robotics developed.
