In many single-celled organisms, asexual reproduction happens through binary fission. The parent cell copies its genetic material and divides into two daughter cells. Bacteria and archaea commonly reproduce this way, while yeast can reproduce by budding. Because there is no genetic contribution from a second parent, offspring produced asexually are usually genetically identical to the parent. They are often called clones, although mutations can create small differences. This makes asexual reproduction efficient: one organism can rapidly produce descendants without finding a mate.

A common mix-up is confusing asexual reproduction with self-fertilization. Self-fertilization still involves gametes and sexual reproduction; asexual reproduction does not.
