What type of religious service often accompanies a quinceañera?

The story behind the answer

A Catholic Mass often accompanies a quinceañera.

The religious service is commonly called a quinceañera Mass or a Misa de acción de gracias, a Mass of thanksgiving. In communities with strong Catholic traditions, the celebrant and her family may attend church before the reception, where the occasion is marked with prayers and blessings.

The Mass is not a universal requirement. Quinceañera customs differ across countries, families, denominations, and generations. Some families hold a religious service, some choose a nonreligious celebration, and some organize only a party. The presence of a Mass therefore identifies a common tradition rather than a rule that applies to every event.

A quinceañera Mass should also not be confused with baptism or marriage. It is associated with a milestone birthday and thanksgiving, not with entering the Catholic Church or forming a marriage. The reception that follows may include formal dances, speeches, food, and a court of honor.
