What type of rear doors does the Tesla Model X feature?

The Tesla Model X features falcon wing doors as its rear doors.

These powered doors are hinged in two sections and lift upward, using sensors and articulated hinges to detect nearby obstacles. Tesla chose the design to provide access to the second and third rows without requiring a wide side-opening arc in a parking space.

The Model X was unveiled in 2012 and entered production in 2015. Its falcon wing doors became one of the vehicle’s most recognizable features, alongside its all-electric powertrain and three-row crossover layout. They are fitted to the rear passenger openings; the front doors use conventional side hinges, with automatic-opening features on some versions.

“Falcon wing” is Tesla’s official name, even though the doors are sometimes casually called gull-wing doors. Traditional gull-wing doors usually have a single roof-mounted hinge and rise as one panel, while the Model X doors use a more complex, sensor-controlled folding motion.
