What type of protective vehicle did Leonardo da Vinci sketch for soldiers in 1487?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci sketched an armored fighting vehicle for soldiers in 1487.

The design resembles a conical, turtle-shaped vehicle covered by sloped armor plates. It was intended to protect its occupants while they operated weapons through openings around the structure. Leonardo proposed several light cannons arranged around the vehicle, giving it the appearance of a mobile platform for battlefield fire.

The vehicle would have been moved by people turning internal cranks connected to wheels. A famous problem in the drawing is that some gears appear arranged so the machine would not move correctly. Historians debate whether this was a deliberate concealment, a drafting error, or simply an unfinished design. No evidence shows that Leonardo’s vehicle was built for warfare.

Calling it a modern tank is convenient but potentially misleading. Tanks use engines, tracks, and military systems developed much later. Leonardo’s armored vehicle belongs to the history of Renaissance military engineering, where designers explored mobile protection and concentrated firepower using available mechanical technology.
