The type of music group traditionally associated with some Mexican quinceañera celebrations is mariachi.
Mariachi is a Mexican musical tradition usually performed by an ensemble of singers and instrumentalists. Typical instruments can include violins, trumpets, guitars, vihuela, and guitarrón. Families may hire a mariachi group to serenade the celebrant, accompany a meal, or perform during a reception.
Mariachi is especially associated with Mexico, but its music is performed internationally and appears at many kinds of celebrations, including weddings, birthdays, religious events, and public festivals. It is not exclusive to quinceañeras, and not every quinceañera includes live mariachi music.
The term should not be confused with the court of honor. Chambelanes and damas are ceremonial attendants, while mariachi musicians provide entertainment. Receptions may instead use a recorded playlist, a DJ, a band, or another regional musical tradition, depending on the family’s preferences and location.
