What type of military vehicle did Leonardo da Vinci design as a covered, rotating-turret war machine?
Answer
Armoured fighting vehicle
Answer
Armoured fighting vehicle
Leonardo da Vinci designed an armoured fighting vehicle as a covered, rotating-turret war machine.
Drawn around 1487, the vehicle resembles a conical, turtle-like shell mounted on four wheels. Its sloping armour was intended to deflect incoming weapons, while cannons around the perimeter could fire in multiple directions. A crew inside would turn the wheels through cranks and gears.
The design was probably intended for Ludovico Sforza, ruler of Milan, during an era when Italian states competed to develop siege and battlefield technology. Leonardo presented military machines as part of his service offering to Sforza.
The vehicle was never built in Leonardo’s lifetime, and modern reconstructions have shown that the original drawing contains mechanical problems, including a gearing arrangement that would prevent normal movement. It is therefore best understood as a concept for an armoured fighting vehicle, not as the first operational tank.
