What type of military vehicle did Leonardo da Vinci design as a covered, armed platform?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed an armored vehicle as a covered, armed military platform.

The vehicle was drawn around 1487–1489 for Ludovico Sforza, the ruler of Milan. Its conical protective shell was intended to deflect incoming fire, while a ring of light cannons allowed soldiers inside to fire in several directions. The machine was designed to move using the turning force of people operating internal cranks.

The vehicle is commonly called Leonardo’s tank, but that modern label can be misleading. It was not a tracked tank in the twentieth-century sense, and it was never built for Renaissance warfare. A famous drawing also contains a mechanical problem: if reconstructed exactly as shown, some of the gears work in the wrong direction. Historians debate whether this was an error or deliberate sabotage of the design.

The concept remains important because it combines armor, mobility, and all-round firepower in a single vehicle, anticipating several principles later used in armored warfare.
