What type of mechanical soldier did Leonardo da Vinci design around 1495?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a humanoid robot, often called Leonardo’s robot, around 1495.

The machine was created in the context of preparations for a pageant in Milan sponsored by Ludovico Sforza. Leonardo’s surviving drawings show an armored figure with internal gears, cables, and pulleys. The mechanism could reportedly sit, stand, move its arms, and operate its jaw when reconstructed according to the sketches.

This was an automaton, not a robot in the modern electronic sense. It had no computer, sensors, or independent decision-making system. Its movements came from mechanical transmission and could be controlled by an operator or programmed through the arrangement of cams and gears.

The original machine has not survived, and historians cannot verify every performance attributed to it. In 2002, Mark Rosheim built a working reconstruction based on Leonardo’s drawings. The project showed that the design contained a plausible articulated mechanism, although some details remain interpretive.
