What type of mechanical figure did Leonardo da Vinci design in 1495?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a humanoid robot in 1495.

His mechanical knight was created for a festival in Milan that was planned by Ludovico Sforza. Leonardo’s notes and drawings show an armored figure able to sit, stand, move its arms, and operate its jaw through a system of cables, gears, and pulleys. The machine was designed to resemble a knight rather than a human-shaped industrial robot.

The original mechanism was not known for centuries, because the surviving evidence consisted mainly of Leonardo’s anatomical and mechanical sketches. In the 1950s, researchers studying the Codex Madrid manuscripts identified drawings that helped clarify the robot’s internal arrangement.

In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a working reconstruction based on Leonardo’s plans. The machine is often called Leonardo’s robot, but the word robot was not used in Leonardo’s time; it was introduced much later from the Czech word robota. The reconstruction demonstrates the sophistication of Renaissance mechanical engineering without proving that every original component was completed.
