What type of machine was Leonardo da Vinci’s mechanical knight designed to be?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci’s mechanical knight was designed to be a humanoid robot.

Leonardo developed the design around 1495 while working in Milan for Ludovico Sforza. The machine was probably intended for a court pageant rather than for practical labor or combat. Its internal system of pulleys, cables, and gears could move the arms, head, and jaw.

The design appears in Leonardo’s notebooks, where the knight is shown inside armor. In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a working interpretation based on those drawings. The reconstruction demonstrated that Leonardo’s mechanism could produce several human-like movements.

This machine is often called Leonardo’s robot, but it was not an electronic robot in the modern sense. It was a mechanically programmed automaton, operated by stored motion in its gear and cable system.
