What type of machine did Leonardo da Vinci propose for automatically weaving cloth?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci proposed a mechanical loom for automating parts of cloth weaving.

Leonardo’s notebooks contain designs for textile machinery that aimed to coordinate repeated actions such as moving threads and passing the shuttle. These mechanisms reflect his interest in replacing tiring manual labor with synchronized motion. The drawings are part of a larger group of studies involving gears, cams, pulleys, and rotating shafts.

A loom is a machine that interlaces lengthwise warp threads with crosswise weft threads. Leonardo’s proposals did not create the fully automated industrial looms that appeared centuries later, but they show that he was thinking about mechanized textile production during the Renaissance.

The invention should not be confused with the spinning wheel, which twists fibers into yarn, or the later Jacquard loom, which used punched cards to control patterns. Leonardo’s designs were experimental concepts and are not evidence that he operated a successful automated textile factory.
