What type of machine did Leonardo da Vinci design to produce textile thread?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a spinning machine to produce textile thread.

Spinning turns loose fibers such as wool or flax into continuous yarn by drawing the fibers out and twisting them. Leonardo’s mechanical studies included devices intended to automate parts of this labor-intensive process. His drawings show how gears, spindles, and rotating components could coordinate fiber handling and twisting.

The idea belonged to a broader Renaissance interest in mechanizing skilled workshop tasks. Textile production was economically important, but spinning was often slow and dependent on human operators. Leonardo’s designs sought regular motion and greater output rather than merely copying a hand tool.

Leonardo did not create the modern spinning machine used in factories. Industrial spinning machinery developed much later, especially during the Industrial Revolution, with inventions such as the spinning jenny and water frame. His design is best understood as an early mechanized textile concept.
