What type of machine did Leonardo da Vinci design to produce a continuous length of rope?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a rope-making machine for producing rope mechanically.

Rope was essential for ships, construction, lifting equipment, and military engineering, but traditional rope-making required coordinated manual work over considerable length. Leonardo’s mechanical studies explored ways to twist strands systematically and make the process more controlled.

The design belongs to a wider group of machines in Leonardo’s notebooks that mechanized repetitive workshop tasks. Its importance lies less in a single finished machine than in the attempt to coordinate rotation, tension, and strand movement through mechanical parts.

Leonardo’s rope maker should not be confused with the spinning jenny, an eighteenth-century textile machine used to spin multiple yarns. Rope-making twists already formed strands into a stronger cord, while textile spinning turns fibers into yarn. Those processes are related but technically different.
